ECT Statutory Induction

Are teachers who have gained QTLS (Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills Status) exempt from ECT induction as they were under the old NQT arrangements?

Yes they are.

This is the relevant extract from the guidance re: teachers who are exempt from induction: Teachers who have been awarded Qualified Teacher in Learning and Skills (QTLS) Status by the Society for Education (SET) (formerly the Institute for Learning – IfL) and who hold active membership with the SET.

How long does it take for a full time ECT to complete their induction?

If the ECT is deemed to be on track and meeting the Teacher Standards (via progress reviews and assessments) they should complete their induction in 2 years (6 terms)

How long will it take an part time ECT to complete their induction?

Part-time ECTs should have an induction period that is the full-time equivalent of two years.

E.g. an ECT on a 0.5 contract would, in theory, have a 4 year induction period.

However, the AB has the authority to reduce this if there is sufficient evidence that the ECT has met the Teacher Standards. Every case is individual so the Induction Tutor and AB QA Officer should discuss what is appropriate.

All of the above if is applicable if the ECT is deemed to be on track and meeting the Teacher Standards (via progress reviews and assessments).

What is the length of ECT Induction?

The ECT Induction period is two years.

This allows sufficient time for the ECT’s professional development and for evidence to be gathered to show they are meeting the Teacher Standards at the level expected of a teacher who has been teaching for two years.
